Kangana Ranaut ; born 23 March 1987) is an Indian film actress. She has established a successful career in Bollywood, and is the recipient of a National Film Award and two Filmfare Awards.
Born in Bhambla, a small town in Himachal Pradesh, Ranaut initially aspired to a career in medicine on the insistence of her parents. Adamant on building her own career path, she relocated to Delhi at age sixteen, where she briefly dabbled with modelling. After training under the theatre director Arvind Gaur, Ranaut made her feature film debut with the 2006 thriller Gangster, for which she was awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. She subsequently received praise for portraying emotionally intense characters in the dramas Woh Lamhe (2006), Life in a... Metro (2007) and Fashion (2008). For the last of these, she won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress and a Filmfare Award in the same category.
Ranaut subsequently featured in the commercially successful films Raaz – The Mystery Continues (2009) and Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai (2010), though was criticised for being typecast in neurotic roles. A comic role in the 2011 box office hit Tanu Weds Manu proved to be a turning point in her career, though this was followed by a series of brief, glamorous roles in films that failed to propel her career forward. She then portrayed a superwoman in the science fiction film Krrish 3 (2013), one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of all time, and established herself as a leading actress of Hindi cinema by playing the protagonist of the comedy-drama Queen (2014).
Ranaut's off-screen life has been the subject of scandal in the Indian media. She is particularly known for expressing her honest opinions in public, and is frequently credited as one of the most fashionable celebrities in India.
Early life and background
Ranaut was born on 23 March 1987 at Bhambla (now Surajpur), a small town in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, into a Rajput family. Her mother, Asha Ranaut, is a school teacher, and her father, Amardeep Ranaut, is a businessman. She has an elder sister, Rangoli, who now works as her manager, and a younger brother, Akshat. Her great-grandfather, Sarju Singh Ranaut, was a Member of the Legislative Assembly and her grandfather, was an IAS officer. She grew up in a joint family at their ancestral haveli in Bhambla, and has described her childhood as "simple and happy".
Ranaut has said that she was "stubborn and rebellious" while growing up: "If my father would gift my brother a plastic gun and get a doll for me, I would not accept that. I questioned the discrimination."She didn't subscribe to the stereotypes that were expected of her, and experimented with fashion from a young age: "I would pair up accessories and clothes that, to my neighbours, would seem just bizarre." Ranaut was educated at the DAV School in Chandigarh, where she pursued science as her core subject, remarking that she was "very studious" and "always paranoid about [...] results". She was initially inclined to become a doctor: "I was brought up being told that medicine was a noble choice of career, that I should grow up and be a doctor so I could treat the poor for free. I believed in that, wholeheartedly because that's how kids in those days were trained to 'be good and do good'." A failed unit test in chemistry during her twelfth grade led Ranaut to reconsider her career prospect, and despite preparing for the All India Pre Medical Test, she didn't turn up for the exam. Determined to find her "space and freedom", she relocated to Delhi at the age of sixteen. Her decision to not pursue medicine led to "constant arguments" with her parents and her father refused to sponsor her "aimless pursuit".
In Delhi, Ranaut was unsure of what career prospect to choose; the Elite Modelling Agency were impressed by her looks and suggested that she model for them. She took on a few modelling assignments, but generally disliked the career as she found "no scope for creativity" Ranaut, thus, decided to shift focus towards acting, and joined the Asmita Theatre Group, where she trained under the theatre director Arvind Gaur. She has said: "It's because of theatre that I'm so comfortable in films [...] Arvind was very kind. I went to him and said, I'm going to Bombay, and I need a sort of crash course in acting. So, he taught me acting specially, just for an hour everyday." She participated in Gaur's theatre workshop at the India Habitat Centre, acting in several of his plays, including the Girish Karnad-scripted Taledanda. During a screening, one of the male actors went missing; Ranaut who had been "observing the character from a distance and had an idea about the dialogues and body language" played the part along with her original role of a woman. A positive reaction from the audience prompted her to relocate to Mumbai to pursue a career in film, and she enrolled herself for a four-month acting course from Asha Chandra's drama school.
Ranaut struggled with her meager earnings during this period, eating only "bread and aachar (pickle)"; her father offered to contribute financially, but she refused, later remarking that "it [was] the most damaging thing I did in my life, as it scarred my relationship with him." Her decision to act in films deteriorated her relationship with her relatives; her parents were "horrified", thinking that she would be exploited, her grandfather asked her to drop her surname, and they didn't correspond with her for several years. Ranaut later said: "Today, I have everything one can imagine and there is nothing I want from them, although I do a lot for my family and friends today."Bhambla in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, where her family still lives. Her father, Amardeep Ranaut is a businessman while mother Asha Ranaut is a school teacher. She has an elder sister, Rangoli and a younger brother, Akshit. She completed her schooling from DAV model school. She left her college education half way to join Elite Modelling Agency in Delhi in 2003 with the prospect of becoming a model.
Kangana started her career as a theatre actor in Delhi with the Asmita Theatre Group. She trained under eminent theatre director Arvind Gaur. She then went on to join Asha Chandra’s three-month course in 2004 to brush herself to face camera after which she moved to Mumbai to try her luck in movies. In September 2005, Film maker Anurag Basu spotted her drinking coffee in a café, he approached her, and eventually signed her up for a lead role in Gangster which was released during the year 2006. Gangster became both critically and commercially successful and Kangana’s performance was especially applauded. This was followed by another acclaimed performance in Who Lamhe (2006).
Kangana, then went on to star in yet another Anurag Basu project, Life In A…Metro, which went on to become a hit and her performance in the film earned her rave reviews. In 2007, she appeared as an aspiring singer in Shakalaka Boom Boom. However, her most noteworthy role happened with Fashion (2008) in which she starred alongside Priyanka Chopra and Mugdha Godse. The film portrayed  the dark side of the fashion world and received grand critical success. Her role in the film as a supermodel who loses everything on drug abuse gained her widespread praise, fetching her various awards, including the prestigious Filmfare as well as the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. Raaz – The Mystery Continues (2009) with Emraan Hashmi was her last successful film. . The movie has been a commercial success and was declared as first reasonable hit of 2009. She has also starred in South Indian films such as Dhaam Dhoom in Tamil and Ek Niranjan in Telugu.
Personal life
Ranaut has said that her initial years in the film industry were marked with difficulties as she was unprepared to be an actress. She was conscious of her poor command of the English language, and struggled to "fit in":
"People in the industry treated me like I didn't deserve to be spoken to and I was some unwanted object. I couldn't speak English fluently and people made fun of me for that. So dealing with rejection became a part of life. [...] All that has taken a toll, I guess. I find it hard to deal with praise. Today, when people say that I have made it and made it on my own, I feel like locking up myself somewhere... It scares me."
Ranaut found support in the actor Aditya Pancholi and his wife Zarina Wahab, and considered them her "family away from home". She was embroiled in a well publicised scandal when the media speculated on the nature of her relationship with Pancholi. She declined to speak about it openly, though made several public appearances with him. In 2007 it was reported that Ranaut had filed a police complaint against Pancholi for physically assaulting her under the influence of alcohol. The following year Pancholi confirmed the affair in an interview, saying that he had been cohabiting with Ranaut in the past, and accused her of owing him money worth ₹2.5 million (US$42,000). In response, Ranaut's spokesperson said that "[a]fter physically assaulting her in the middle of a road, he has no right to expect anything from her", adding that she had "already given ₹5 million (US$85,000) to [him] as a goodwill gesture". Ranaut later said that "dating a married man was a mistake" and that the incident had left her "physically and mentally" damaged.
While filming Raaz – The Mystery Continues in 2008, Ranaut began a romantic relationship with co-star Adhyayan Suman. On Suman's insistence that he focus on his professional career, the couple separated the following year. From 2010 to 2012, Ranaut was involved in a long-distance romance with Nicholas Lafferty, an English doctor; she described the relationship as "the most normal" she ever had, but decided on an amicable split as she wasn't ready for marriage. She has since maintained that she will never get married, and has expressed a desire to not be bound by a relationship: "I want to do some other things. I want to go [...] trekking and learn French cooking and more about wines."
Ranaut has maintained a strong connect, and makes yearly visits to her hometown of Bhambla. She lives in Mumbai with her sister Rangoli, who was the victim of an acid attack in 2006. A practicing Hindu, Ranaut follows the teachings of the spiritual leader Swami Vivekananda and considers meditation to be "the highest form of worshipping God". She practices vegetarianism and was listed as "India's hottest vegetarian" in a poll conducted by PETA in 2013. Since 2009 Ranaut has been studying the dance form of kathak from the Nateshwar Nritya Kala Mandir. She has said that the technical process of filmmaking is of tremendous interest to her, and to better her understanding of it Ranaut enrolled for a two-month screenplay writing course at the New York Film Academy in 2014. In an interview with Filmfare she said that despite her stardom, she wants to lead a normal life: "I don't want to lose my rights as a common person to learn and grow".

Ranaut has started her career as a theatre artist in Delhi with Asmita Theatre Group. She trained under eminent theatre director Arvind Gaur. She participated in his theatre workshop at India Habitat Centre and acted in several plays. Her first play with Arvind Gaur was Girish Karnad's Taledanda (Rakt-Kalyan). Ranaut joined Asha Chandra's course in 2004 to brush herself to face the camera. In 2005, luck hit her with the movie "Gangster", which stood at success on box office. Apart from bollywood, Kangna also stepped into a telugu film Ek Niranjana, where she proved her acting skills.
Marriage
Kangana Ranaut has no plans for marriage as she is busy with other priorities in life. "I have no plans for marriage and I like to be alone. There are other things in my life which are my priorities. Marriage is about companionship and commitment but I have no plans." She also said about her Mr Perfect " I want someone who is not very materialistic. He should be very overtly ambitious, but also a chilledout person like me."

Performances: technique and analysis[edit]
According to media reports, Kapoor is one most versatile and talented actress who appeared in the Hindi film. [64] Commenting on this, director Suneel Darshan "She is one of the most versatile actresses in Bollywood after Madhuri Dixit". According to Indra Kumar "Karisma is the actress today, i will bypass ten other highly popular actresses and zero in on Karisma alone. She is one of the most complete actresses today. Madhuri never did a Fiza or Zubeida in her heydays. Karisma is a step ahead". While discussing her career M.S.M. Desai journaliste wrote "Karisma Kapoor is one actress who has had it all, enjoying both commercial and artistic success. During her decade long career she has done as many as 60 films and has proved her versatility and prowess at both comedy and melodrama with equal ease".
Controversy:

Here Lolo did a good job of hiding out from the ills. But that success got limited when the media broke into flames with news of her engagement to Abhishek Bachchan and later break up with the same; Next to this came up the other issue of another family rift. Apparently this side of the Kapoor bloc conveniently missed out Riddhima’s wedding. Riddhima is the daughter of Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh and sister to Ranbir Kapoor.  This did end up souring the relationship between the two divisions of the Present Kapoor family.
Marriage
Karisma is married to industrialist Sanjay Kapoor on 29 September 2003 but the duo almost called off their relationship now. They have two children, a daughter Samaira and son Kiaan Raj Kapoor. The pair has reportedly filed for divorce and are in talks about their children custody.

Lopez gained her first regular high-profile job as a Fly Girl dancer on In Living Color in 1991, where she remained a regular until she decided to pursue an acting career in 1993. She received her first leading role in the Selena biopic of the same name in 1997. Lopez became the first Latina actress to earn over $1 million for a role the following year, with the film Out of Sight. She ventured into the music industry in 1999 with her debut studio album, On the 6, joining a select few in successfully converting from a film to a music career.
With the simultaneous release of her second studio album J.Lo and her film The Wedding Planner in 2001, Lopez became the first person to have a number one album and film in the same week. Her 2002 remix album, J to tha L–O! The Remixes, became the first in history to debut at number one on the US Billboard 200, while her fifth studio album, Como Ama una Mujer (2007), received the highest first-week sales for a Spanish album in the United States. With records sales of 80 million and a cumulative film gross of over $2 billion, Lopez is regarded as the most influential Hispanic performer in the United States, as well as its highest paid Latin entertainer. As of May 2012, she has an estimated net worth of $250 million.
Lopez has used her position as a global icon of pop culture to begin her own empire, consisting of various clothing lines, accessories, fragrances, a production company, television shows and a charitable foundation among other activities. Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez, the first Latina actress to get paid over a million per movie as well as the first artist to have a number one movie and album in the same week!
As a dancer, singer, and actress J.Lo has got it all! She is one of the biggest names in entertainment today! Her new hit album, J.Lo, debuted at number one for two straight weeks and with her 2001 release Angel Eyes, she could be close to an Oscar nomination. But this is just the beginning for this multitalented and beautiful artist...
July 24, 1969 saw the birth of Jennifer Lynn Lopez; second daughter to Guadalupe Rodriguez Lopez, a kindergarten teacher, and David Lopez, a computer operator specialist. Lopez, Leslie and Lynda, her two other sisters, grew up listening to the rhythms of Salsa, Merengue and Bachata. At the age of five, little Jenny performed in the living room for her parents and at seven years old she went to her first tour around New York City with her dance class.
Jennifer Lopez is one of those stars who worked hard for years for her “overnight” success. The singer/dancer/actor began her career as a dancer in stage musicals, touring Europe (in Golden Musicals of Broadway) and Japan (in Synchronicity) as a teen. At age sixteen, she appeared in the movie, My Little Girl (1986).
After graduating from Preston High School, Lopez attended one semester at Baruch College in New York City studying law, but Jennifer’s first love was dancing. When she heard about scholarships to a dance school in Manhattan, she went for it. At the same time she was taking full time courses in Baruch and taking her dance classes. Eventually this lead to a falling out with her mother who didn’t want Jennifer to keep dancing and giving up studying to become a lawyer. So Jen moved out the house without having anywhere to stay, she moved into the building where she took dance classes.
In 1990, Lopez was hired as a fly girl (dancer) for the TV series, In Living Color, showcasing her natural energy and talent. During the next two years she took on acting roles in TV’s South Central, Second Chances and Malibu Road and, in 1993, completed her television career with the TV movie Nurses On The Line: The Crash Of Flight 7.
Her small screen career may have ended, but stardom was just beginning. Lopez was cast in Mi Familia (My Family) and Money Train in 1995, and Jack in 1996. It was in 1997 (during which year she was married to, and divorced from, Ojani Noa) that the big movies came her way -- Blood and Wine, Selena, Anaconda, and U Turn. That year she was named one of People Magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People and received a Golden Globe Best Actress Nomination for her uncannily accurate portrayal of singer Selena Quintanilla Perez in Selena. The acclaim brought her parts in Out Of Sight (1998), after which she became the highest paid Latin actress, and Antz (voice - 1998).
Lopez showed herself to be a fine actor in the Selena role, but wasn’t acting when she paralleled the role of the popular singer in real life with her own music career. Her debut album, On The 6, went platinum within two months of its release. Lopez was nominated for four MTV music awards and won the Billboard Pop Clip Of The Year award for the music video If You Had My Love. Her single Waiting For Tonight from the album, and the album itself, have been nominated for Grammy awards. Lopez is nominated, as well, for Brit Awards 2000 Best International Newcomer and Best International Solo Artist titles.
The public and critical recognition of the last year was tempered, recently, with some sordid front-page news. Lopez was nabbed and jailed along with rap artist Sean “Puffy” Combs (she and Combs are the unofficial “first couple of hip-hop”) in an alleged gun possession incident. Although locked up for 14 hours, Lopez was released without being charged. Supportive followers gathered for her subsequent court appearance.
Already Lopez has three movies upcoming in 2000 and 2001 -- The Wedding Planner, Angel Eyes and The Cell. This talented entertainer has a solid fan base and credits in the tough worlds of pop music and Hollywood hits. Her off-camera troubles pale beside both her accomplishments and her potential.
On November 17, 2000, the date when her second album was supposed to drop in stores, was held back till January 23, 2001 and its title changed from A Passionate Journey to J.Lo. In December in the MTV Europe Music Awards her first single, “Love Don’t Cost A Thing”, was performed live and world premiered! On January 23, 2001, the album finally hit the streets and debuted on the Billboard Charts in many countries at number one, while her single was still heating up the charts! In that same week, “The Wedding Planner”, a romantic comedy, was released in theaters and snatched the number one position at the box office. Making Jennifer Lopez the first entertainer to have her an album and a movie debut at number one in the same week!
After the release of her new album and movie rumors of a split from Puff Daddy, currently P.Diddy, were still were around until P.Diddy officially announced that they were broken up on February 14, 2001. After the break up with Sean (P.Diddy) Combs, Jennifer moved on and went on to start filming her new movie, Enough and found a new partner, Cris Judd, a California dancer-turned-video director, who appeared in her videos Love Don't Cost A Thing and Play.
Through all the tough and rough times this multitalented artist, Jennifer Lopez has gone through, she is one of the biggest entertainers and idols of today. She's currently rumored to be pregnant and engaged to Judd, and plans to wed have been made for September 2001.
Lopez's third single off her sophomore album, J.Lo, I'm Real Remix featuring rapper Ja Rule, premiered June 25, 2001 on MTV. A new clothing line, appropriately named J.Lo by Jennifer Lopez, hit stores Fall 2001 and Jen's next film Enough, was released on May 24 2002.
J.Lo went back to her 'roots', Puerto Rico, to film a concert special for broadcast by NBC on November 20, 2001.
Hit after hit, box office after box office, Jennifer Lopez cannot and will not be stopped. She'll continue to ascend to the highest places in the entertainment industry, becoming one of the brightest shining stars.
Personal life
Anthony and Lopez, 2006.
For over fifteen years, Lopez's personal life has attracted widespread media attention. From February 22, 1997 to January 1998, she was married to Cuban waiter Ojani Noa. Since their brief marriage, Lopez has endured legal troubles regarding Noa. She sued to prevent him from publishing a book about their marriage in April 2006, contending that it violated their confidentiality agreement. The following year, a court-appointed arbitrator issued a permanent injunction forbidding Noa from "criticizing, denigrating, casting in a negative light or otherwise disparaging" Lopez. She was awarded $545,000 in compensatory damages and Noa was ordered to hand over all copies of materials related to the book to Lopez or her attorney. A lawsuit regarding a compromising private honeymoon video in Noa's possession is presently running.
While working on her first album On the 6, Lopez began dating record producer and rapper Sean Combs. On December 27, 1999, the couple were arrested along with two others in connection with a shooting outside the Times Square Club in New York. They were charged with criminal possession of a weapon as well as stolen property. Lopez was soon exonerated, having had nothing to do with the crime. However, Combs was charged and indicted by a Manhattan grand jury. After leaving Combs, Lopez developed a relationship with former back-up dancer Cris Judd, whom she was married to from September 29, 2001 to June 2002. Following her second divorce, she commenced a high-profile relationship with actor and director Ben Affleck, whom she became engaged to in November 2002. The media began to refer to them as "Bennifer" and they became a prominent supercouple in the media and popular culture. Bennifer became a popular term, which was eventually entered into urban dictionaries and neologism dictionaries as notable, as the name blend started the trend of other celebrity couples being referred to by the combination of their first names. The couple postponed their nuptials indefinitely a day prior to the planned ceremony in September 2003, citing the media's interference with the event as the reason.
Following her break-up with Affleck in January 2004, Lopez began dating long-time friend Marc Anthony (born as Marco Antonio Muñiz). The couple wed that June. Two men attempted to ransom a private wedding video which was stolen from the couple for one million dollars; however they were arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court on charges of conspiracy, attempted grand larceny and possession of stolen property. On November 7, 2007, during the final night of their co-headlining tour, Lopez and Anthony officially confirmed that they were expecting their first child. The announcement ended months of speculation over the pregnancy. Her father confirmed that the couple were expecting twins, revealing that it runs in the family: "My sister also had twins, so it's a hereditary thing".
Lopez gave birth to a son, Maximilian David and a daughter, Emme Maribel, in Long Island, New York on February 22, 2008. The twins were introduced in the March 11, 2008 issue of People, for which the magazine paid a reported $6 million — the photographs of the twins became the most expensive celebrity picture ever taken at the time. Three years later in July 2011, the couple announced their split, with Anthony filing for divorce in April 2012. Since October 2011, Lopez has been in a relationship with her former back-up dancer Casper Smart. Lopez has stated, "I am a non-traditional family. Me being a single mom, their dad doesn't live at home with them. They have three stepbrothers from two other mothers...that’s not traditional".
